I somewhere wrote, of course under another pen name, there were no great apologists in the last century, after thinkers like Kierkegaard, Pascal et. al. it ends.
I was wrong.
Terrible wrong.
The truth is that there are two great figures in the last century, G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis.
Both are, that for sure, more poets and »intellectuals« than deep philosophers but, maybe, this is the transformation the Christian apologetic goes through under the pressure of scientific explanation, literary absurdism and philosophical Positivism.
The last century was shaked by nearly one big discouvery per decade. More than the human history ever wittnesses.
The life of the letters react by this with Lovecraftianic fear of the unknown and the impression of a world that lose it's telos; the philosophy becames more relaxed.
Chesterton's essays are worth reading. They are funny. He doesn't lack wit or spirit and the only thing he needs to fear is losing himself in abstractions.
