Over 100,000 years ago, on what is now known as Nantucket Island, Clarence O. Shellcracker became the first person to eat a live oyster.
A Catholic, Mr Shellcracker was searching for something to break the monotony of fish-on-Friday.
Having watched him devour the raw oyster, his friends thought him mad.
The 18th century gourmet, Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, was visited by a friend one evening. 'Come in,' he said, 'I was just enjoying my dinner.'
The friend apologised for his interruption. 'I didn't know that you were dining,' he said.
