I quite went off the word 'modernity'when, as a new graduate student in America, I was forced to attend a very solemn and rather pretentious seminar on 'The Modernization Of Japan'. We seemed to go round and round in circles and never really get anywhere. A metaphor for the modern world perhaps!

What the hell are modern times when you think about it anyway? Why don't you watch Modern times by Charlie Chaplin and decide just how modern it is.

There is this thing called »modern« that we learn about at school. Sometimes it is big and sometimes it is small, but always it is full of a lot of rubbish.

»Hello, welcome to the Charles B. Ross sash & door factory. This is our most modern building on site (it is from 1910) and is powered by a diesel engine. Originally, though, the factory used a wood-burning steam engine, but that would be difficult to maintain. Note the jointer, planer and circular saw, as well as the barrels of sawdust. I don't use this machine, because it is too dangerous. Kill me now
