The nominalist position is that names and that which they name have no innate connection that the universe is itself nameless, and that names only exist as interpreted by sentient observers.
Perhaps the »nameless forest« section of Lewis Carroll's »Through the Looking Glass« serves as a decent demonstration of the nominalist principle.
Modern logicians have largely adopted the nominalist position.
