Trousers is another word for Pants. I don't know if there really is any formal difference between the two. I do know that in the UK and Ireland, what we call underwear is known as pants.
The older I grow, the more trousers seem to suit me. But men don't seem to have the same feeling about skirts, by and large. Strange....
